Position:
University of Wyoming President

Philip L. Dubois (do-BWAAH) became the 22nd president of the University of Wyoming on April 1, 1997.

Dubois came to UW from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he served as professor of political science and vice chancellor for academic affairs since 1991.

He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Davis in 1972 and both his master's (1974) and doctoral (1978) degrees in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1978 he was awarded the Edward S. Corwin Award from the American Political Science Association, for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of public law.

Dubois is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies. His academic research has centered on judicial reform.

Between 1978-91, Dubois taught political science at UC-Davis, advancing from assistant professor to professor. He moved to UNC-Charlotte in 1991 to serve as vice chancellor for academic affairs. The provost title was added in 1994 in recognition of added responsibilities within the Division of Academic Affairs.

Dubois was selected from more than 120 individuals who applied, or were nominated, for the UW presidency.

Dubois has been a strong supporter of the UW intercollegiate athletics program. During his installation remarks, he stressed that quality athletic programs can reinforce quality academic programs by helping to recruit students who otherwise would not have considered the University of Wyoming and by enhancing the University's reputation within the state and across the country. As president, he has reinforced UW's historic commitment to integrity and equal opportunity in intercollegiate athletics while supporting efforts to become increasingly competitive in on-field performance and marketing.

Dubois served as chair and president of the Mountain West Conference for its inaugural year of competition (1999-2000).

He is married to Lisa Lewis Dubois. They have three children -- Logan, Taylor, and Ali.
