He took second place at the conference championship in the 200 freestyle posting an NCAA `B' cut time of 1:37.72. His time in the 200 free was the second fastest in UW history. His second individual top five came in the 500 free where he placed fifth. Griffel's 200 and 500 free top-five finishes earned him All-MW honors for the first time in his young Cowboy career. He also helped the 800 freestyle team to a fourth-place finish. He touched the wall in first place in the 200 free four times during the season, most notably against Air Force, where he also picked up a win in the 100 free. He earned his first letter award for the Cowboys. High School: Griffel had an exceptional high school career being named All-American and his team's Swimmer of the Year all four years. He competed in the junior nationals in 2009 and 2010. Griffel competed in the YMCA nationals in 2008, '09 and '10 while a member of his high school team. Griffel also excelled in the classroom during high school. He graduated a member of the National Honor Society and was named Scholastic All-American all four years of high school. Personal: Griffel was born July 29, 1991, and is the son of David and Sally Griffel. He has two siblings, Jordan and Colter. He is majoring in animal and veterinary sciences at UW.
