Wyoming Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to Brigham Young
Jan. 13, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Despite an abundance of strong individual performances Saturday in Provo, Utah, Wyoming's men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost to Mountain West Conference opponent Brigham Young. The Cowboys fell by a score of 138-99, dropping their season record to 4-2, 1-1 in the MWC. BYU's women defeated the Cowgirls 141-102. The loss was the first of the season for the UW women in a dual meet. The Cowgirls' season record now stands at 5-1, 1-1 in conference. The Cowgirls won five individual events against the Cougars. Sophomore Allison Schmid led the charge for UW with two victories. Schmid won the 200 free with a time of 1:56.28 and won the 500 free with a time of 5:13.58. Sophomore Angie Sax took the 100 fly in a time of 57.34, sophomore Mabry Fiddler won the 1000 free with a time of 10:46.64 and freshman Katie Haywood placed first in the 100 free with a time of 54.55. In the diving events senior Wendy O'Connell placed second on both the one and three-meter springboards. O'Connell broke the Wyoming all-time school record on the three-meter with her score of 287.93. Damian Storz once again led the Cowboys with a first-place finish in the 400 IM (4:04.65) and the 500 free (4:40.13). Storz also placed second in the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.39. Other strong performances for the Pokes were by senior Buddy Boysen (second in the 100 fly), junior Guy Fulfer (second in the 100 free), freshman Brad Leopold (second in the 100 back) and senior Al Jarrell (second in the 100 breast). Junior diver Oscar Delgado placed second on both springboard events. "We won a lot of events today but things just didn't come through for us the way we had hoped," said Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson. "Allison Schmid was the star winning two events, which was just huge for us, she swam very strong. "I was very pleased with the performances considering how exhausted the team was. It was just a very hard day for us after swimming against Utah on Friday evening but that's all part of going on the road. You just have to take your lumps and learn from the experience." Johnson said. Both Wyoming teams will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 20, for
a conference dual against the Air Force Academy.
