Colorado State Proves To Be Too Much For the Young Cowgirls
Jan. 26, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Colorado State avenged its first ever dual loss to the University of Wyoming women's swimming and diving team last season with a convincing 184-116 win Friday evening at Moby Pool in Fort Collins, Colo. The Cowgirls only managed three victories during the 16 events contest against the Rams. The loss dropped the Cowgirls' season record to 7-2, 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. Despite the setback, Wyoming had a few outstanding performances against CSU. The Cowgirls had back-to-back one-two-three finishes in the 100 breast and 200 butterfly in their attempt to beat the Rams. Freshman Crystal Mecham took first in the 100 breast in a time of 1:08.77 and sophomore Angie Sax won the 200 fly in a time of 2:08.11. Mecham also placed second in the 200 breast and Sax placed second in the 100 butterfly. Sophomore Allison Schmid was the only other Cowgirl to win an event, placing first in the 200 breast in a time of 2:25.63. Sophomore Mabry Fiddler swam strong despite being ill, placing second in the 1000 free, 100 breast and 500 free. Sophomore Jody Riskowski placed second in the 100 back and third in the 50 free, sophomore Darcrea Corey took second in the 200 butterfly and sophomore diver Lauren Colaric placed second on the 1-meter springboard. "As great as last years win was against CSU this loss today is pretty bitter," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "Hopefully we can learn something from it and move on and get ready for the conference meet in a few weeks. As young as we are the freshman learned tonight that they have to step up in a meet like this. "On a positive note we had a great turnout of Wyoming fans for the meet and I was super appreciative of that. A lot of parents showed up and the men's team came down to cheer the women on. Our cheering section dominated and outnumbered the CSU section and I was very happy to see that." Johnson said. The Cowgirls will have no time to rest as they jump back in the water
Saturday at 1:00pm when they host the Colorado School of Mines at
Corbett Pool. The men's team will also be competing in their final home
meet of the season. The Cowgirls final home meet at Corbett will be
Feb. 2 when they host Northern Arizona.
