Swimming and Diving Teams Defeat Colorado School of Mines
Jan. 27, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming swimming teams combined won 18 of 22 events Saturday afternoon at Corbett Pool on their way to convincing victories over the Colorado School of Mines. The Wyoming men defeated the Orediggers 113-85, while the Cowgirls won 108-77. The victories improved the Cowboys season record to 5-3, 1-2 in the MWC, and the women's record to 8-2, 3-2 in conference. Seven Poke swimmers won individual events led by sophomore Damian Storz who won two events. Storz won the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.57 and the 500 free with a time of 4:52.25. He also placed second in the 100 fly. Other UW winners against CSM were junior Guy Fulfer in the 200 free (1:47.62), senior Jason Garman in the 50 free (21.82), junior Per Malmberg in the 1650 free (17:13), senior Buddy Boysen in the 100 fly (50.49), junior Jake Rehard in the 100 free (48.38) and freshman Jon McNeely in the 100 back (56.29). The Cowgirl swimmers bounced back from a tough loss Friday night at Colorado State to win eight events. Sophomore Angie Sax earned a couple of victories to lead all Cowgirl swimmers in the 200 IM (2:17.85) and the 100 free (56.05). Other winners for the UW women were sophomore Erin Hennings in the 1650 free (19:15.87), sophomore Mabry Fiddler in the 200 free (1:59.38), sophomore Allison Schmid in the 50 free (26.11), freshman Katie Haywood in the 100 fly (1:01.26), freshman Lauren Bush in the 100 back (1:01.19) and senior Elizabeth Nowak in the 100 breast (1:11.85). The Wyoming divers competed but their scores only counted as an exhibition because the Colorado School of Mines doesn't have a diving team. "We needed a fun meet without a lot of pressure, we've had a lot of those the last three weeks, so this was a good one for the team," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "It was an easy win but their team stepped up and swam hard against us. "We took it easy on them today, we moved some kids around and had them swim some different events they don't normally swim and it's good for them because they get sick of the grind of swimming the same events every weekend. We still need to get healthy and hungry and we have a shot of a great conference meet coming up, we just need to stay focused." Johnson said. The Cowgirls will host Northern Arizona Feb. 2 at Corbett Pool in their
last dual meet of the season. The Wyoming men's dual season is now over
and they will now concentrate in the Mountain West Conference
Championship meet Feb. 14-17.
