Cowboys in Second, Cowgirls in Fourth After Day One of MWC Swimming and Diving Championships

LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Junior diver Oscar Delgado placed third on the one-meter springboard with a score of 275.20 on the opening day of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., helping lead the Pokes to a second-place team finish after three events. BYU, the defending conference champion leads the men's team standings after day one with 120 points while Wyoming comes in with 100 points. The Wyoming women stand fourth with 76 points, just three points behind third-place Utah who have 79 points. BYU leads the women's team standings with 124 points. The Cowgirls' 200 medley relay team of sophomore Jody Riskowski, freshman Cystal Mecham, sophomore Angie Sax and sophomore Lindsey Springer, set a new school record with a time of 1:46.96, breaking the old record of 1:47.51 which was set at last year's conference championships. "The divers came through for us really well and got us off to a good start," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "The swimmers swam very fast today which should carry over into tomorrow. The kids are doing really well so far and we're looking forward to the next few days of competition." The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships continue on Thursday and will conclude on Saturuday.
