Feb. 15, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's and women's swimming and diving teams slipped in the overall team standings Thursday, after the second day of competition at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The Cowboys fell to fourth-place with 132 points while the women slid down to sixth-place with 150 points. The UNLV men overtook BYU for first on the men's side while BYU held onto first on the women's side. Combined, Wyoming managed seven top-ten finishes led by senior diver Wendy O'Connell's fifth-place finish on the three-meter springboard. She was followed by sophomore Lauren Colaric who placed seventh. Sophomore Allison Schmid placed eighth in the 500 freestyle, sophomore Angie Sax placed 10th in the 500 freestyle, sophomore Ted Dibble finished sixth in the 500 free, sophomore Damian Storz placed seventh in the 200 IM and senior Al Jarrell finished 10th in the 200 IM. "We're swimming well, our times are good, but this conference has gotten very deep and very fast in the last year," UW head coach Tom Johnson said. "Hopefully this is a nice wake-up call to our team about how fast they need to go if they want to score in this conference now. "Allison Schmid and Damian Storz swam very well for us today, I'm very pleased with the way Allison has stepped things up and Damian is just continuing to do what he has done all season. I was also very pleased with our women divers. Wendy and Lauren were huge for us today and earned some big points for the team." Johnson said. Overall Team Scores After Day Two: Women Men
