Feb. 16, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team bounced back from a disappointing outing Thursday and turned out on outstanding third day of competition Friday at the conference championships which saw them break five school records and earn an individual conference title. Sophomore Damian Storz won the 400 IM with a time of 3:55.78 to claim the conference title in that event for the second consecutive year. His time was also good enough to give him a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time for the upcoming national championships. Four individual and one relay record were broken Friday by Wyoming swimmers. Senior Buddy Boysen of Laramie broke his own school record in the 100 butterfly by placing second overall with a time of 48.48, which also gives him a NCAA "B" cut time. Freshman Brad Leopold set a new school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.86, which was good enough for a fifth-place finish. Cowgirl sophomore Allison Schmid set a new UW record in the 200 free after placing fourth in that event with a time of 1:52.50. Sophomore Mabry Fiddler broke the school record in the 400 individual medley with a third-place finishing time of 4:26.83. The women's 800 free relay team of Schmid, freshman Lauren Bush, Fiddler and junior Jennifer Schurz set a new school record with a time of 7:40.31, which placed them in fourth. "We had an outstanding day today," said Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson. "The kids swam their hearts out, it was just an unbelievably great day for us." The Wyoming women moved up to fifth place overall in the team standings with 291 points, just six points behind fourth place Utah and 24.50 points behind third place UNLV. BYU remains in first in the women's standings with 555.50 points. The Pokes remain in fourth place with 332.50 points, but gained ground on third place Air Force who have 378 points. UNLV holds a slim 9.50 point lead on second place BYU. Other outstanding performances by Wyoming athletes were given by

(third in the 400 IM), senior Al Jarrell (fifth in the 400 IM),
sophomore Angie Sax (fifth in the 100 butterfly), sophomore Ted Dibble
(fifth in the 200 free), sophomore Jody Riskowski (fourth in the 100
