LARAMIE, Wyo. -

On the final day of competition at the 2001 Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships the Wyoming Cowgirls edged Utah by five points to claim fourth-place in the women's team standings. The UW men also placed fourth in the overall team standings for the second consecutive year.

Wyoming had another outstanding day at the championships as it picked up two second and two third place finishes. Sophomore Damian Storz concluded a solid season with a second place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:42.71. Sophomore Mabry Fiddler finished second in the 200 breast with a school record breaking time of 2:18.46, sophomore Jake Weidert placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.71 and sophomore Darcrea Corey placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.05.

"We had another great day today," Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. "The team came out and really gave it their all and swam and dove at a very high level not just today but throughout the duration of the conference championships. We improved in a lot of areas from last season and hopefully that trend will continue on into next season."

UW diving coach Jason Baumann was honored as the MWC Men's Diving Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the meet. Baumann coached a consistent group of men's divers to eight top ten finishes in the three diving events at the championships.

BYU repeated as men's and women's conference champions for the second year in a row.
