Wyoming Swimming and Diving Competes in First Day of MWC Championships

After the first day of competition at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., the University of Wyoming men's team stands in fourth place and the women are in fifth place. Three-time defending champion BYU leads the meet on both the men's and women's sides. The BYU men took a big first day lead by scoring 139 points. They are followed by Air Force (87), UNLV (79), Wyoming (78) and Utah (62). The women's action is a little closer with BYU leading the way with 101 points. They are followed by CSU (99), New Mexico (84), UNLV (79), Wyoming (76), Utah (73), Air Force (71) and San Diego State (22). In the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, the Wyoming relay team of Katie Haywood, Missy Lewis, Ashley Mallett and Lindsey Springer placed fifth with a time of 150.2. The men's 200 medley relay team of Ethan Maclean, Scott Usher, Gene Birks and Grant Kritzinger placed fourth with a time of 1:32.7. Two Wyoming divers placed in the top eight of the conference on the 1 meter diving board. Adam Miller placed fifth scoring 238.2 points and Ashlie Niederer placed sixth with 224.2 points. "Adam (Miller) had a great day," replied UW head coach
Tom Johnson. "He stepped up and dove hard. I am very
pleased with the effort he gave us. Ashlie (Niederer) also
had a good day and scored some very nice scores."
The final event of the day was the 800 freestyle relay. The Cowgirls placed sixth in the event with a time of 7:55.2. Swimming the event were Allison Schmid, Helja Vanhala, Janelyn Lilly and Katie Haywood. The men's 800 freestyle relay team placed second in the event with a time of 6:51.2. Swimming were Jerram Chudleigh, Gene Birks, Ted Dibble and Grant Kritzinger. "I am very excited about the upcoming weekend," replied Johnson. "The kids had a good day today and we are in a good position on both sides of the meet. I am very pleased with the way our relay's swam, those were some very fast times. Overall, it was a very good way to start the meet." Day Two of the championships will begin tomorrow morning with preliminary events beginning at 10 am and the finals are set to begin at 6 pm (central time).
