The University of Wyoming men's swimming and diving team fell from third to fourth place and the women remained in seventh place after the third day of competition at the MWC Swimming and Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Three time defending champion BYU leads both the men's and women's fields with 620 and 446 points, respectively. On the men's side Air Force trails BYU with 403 points, followed by UNLV (395), Wyoming (369) and Utah (291). Colorado State is in second on the women's side with 416.50 points, followed by UNLV (383), Utah (347), New Mexico (269), Air Force (220.50), Wyoming (210) and San Diego State (158).

The race of the day for the Cowboys was swum by sophomore Scott Usher in the 100 breaststroke. He set a new MWC and Wyoming school record with a time of 54.24. This time qualified Usher for the 2003 NCAA Championships with an "A" cut.

Another great race for the Cowboys was the 400 IM. The Cowboys placed three swimmers in the top four of the race. Damian Storz placed second with a time of 3:58.22, Jake Weidert placed third (3:58.80) and Galen Gough placed fourth (3:59.18).

Cowboy newcomer Gene Birks swam very well in the 100 butterfly and placed fifth. His time of 48.72 preliminarily qualifies him for the NCAA Championships with a "B" cut. It is also the second fastest time in school history.

Two Cowboys placed fourth in their respective events with Adam Miller on the three meter springboard and Ted Dibble in the 200 freestyle. Miller scored 465.90 points on the diving board while Dibble swam to a time of 1:39.97 in the 200 free.

Ethan Maclean also had a good day for the Cowboys. He placed seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.42.

"Our men had a great day," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "I am very pleased with the way our 400 IM'ers battled. Gene, Ethan and Ted all had great swims for us today and I can't say enough about Scott's performance in the 100 breast. We are also very proud of the way Adam dove tonight. He had an awesome night and did his part to keep us in the race."

The women struggled today but still have a very good chance of moving up in the standings with a good final day tomorrow. The swim of the day for the Cowgirls came in the 200 freestyle relay. The Cowgirls placed fifth in the event and set a new school record.

Individually Allison Schmid had the highest placing on the day with her seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle. Her time of 1:51.75 breaks her old record of 1:52.50 for the fastest time in Wyoming history.

"Overall both teams had a pretty good day," said Johnson. "We are in for a battle tomorrow. We need everyone to show up and contribute tomorrow and hopefully we will gain some ground in the standings and get some more NCAA cuts."

The final day of the MWC Swimming and Diving Championships will begin tomorrow morning with the preliminaries beginning at 10 am and the finals starting at 6 pm. Scheduled events include the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and the platform diving events.
