On Thursday and Friday in Oklahoma City, the Wyoming diving team competed in both springboard diving events to open the 2008 NCAA Zone "E" Diving Championships. The women dove one-meter on Thursday and three-meter on Friday while the men did the opposite at the Oklahoma City Community College.

Junior Tyler Miller led the way for the Cowboys in both events. On Thursday, he placed 13th in the three-meter event with a score of 567.40. On Friday, he placed 13th in one-meter with a score of 540.75. Miller was the top finisher from the Mountain West Conference in both events.

Freshmen Kyle Bogner and Mark Murdock each opened their first zone championship meet with a goal of using the opportunity as a learning experience. Bogner placed 17th in the three-meter (545.90) and 19th in the one-meter event (497.15). Murdock placed 15th in three-meter (553.90) and 21st in one-meter (445.95).

"I was really happy for Tyler and the way he dove in both springboard events. He really proved his talents and established himself on a national level," said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. "For Mark and Kyle, this was a tremendous learning experience which will really help them through their careers."

On Friday, the women competed in three-meter diving and both Cowgirls reached the finals. Senior Brittany Wainwright led the way in the final diving event of her storied career. She placed 13th with a score of 506.90. Sophomore Stephanie Ortiz was close behind with a 15th place score of 501.15.

In Thursday's one-meter, neither Cowgirl diver was able to reach the finals as each were only three points shy of qualifying for the top-18. Sophomore Stephanie Ortiz finished 20th with a score of 223.80 and senior Brittany Wainwright placed 21st with a mark of 223.00.

"I was very proud of both of our girls on Friday for coming back and making the top-18 after just missing the second round on Thursday," added Herdt. "These were Brittany's last college events and she ends a very special career as a Cowgirl."

The zone meet will conclude tomorrow with the platform event. The men will begin diving at 10 a.m. (Central Time) and the women will begin at 2:30 p.m. Following the conclusion of tomorrow's platform, the NCAA qualifiers from Zone "E" will be announced.
