2000-2001 Wyoming Swimming & Diving Informational Press Release
Oct. 30, 2000 LARAMIE, Wyo. - This Week for Wyoming: The Wyoming swimming and diving team will host Metro State Saturday, Nov. 4. The meet will begin at 12:00 pm at Corbett Pool.
Early Bird Invite (Oct. 20-21): The UW swimming and diving team opened up its 2000-2001 season at the Early Bird Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. The men had a strong showing placing second out of eight teams with 811 points. Conference rival Air Force won the men's meet with 1,078.5 points. A young Cowgirl team also had a solid outing placing third behind host Colorado State and Fresno State with 745 points. Combined, the men and women won nine events. Junior Oscar Delgado and sophomore Angie Sax each won two events. Delgado swept both diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 448.40 and the three-meter with a score of 447.50. Sax took top honors in the 100 butterfly and the 200 butterfly with times of 58.48 and 2:08.28 respectively. Damian Storz, the 2000 Mountain West Conference men's freshman swimmer of the year, won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:08.16. Storz also placed second in the 200 fly and the 200 IM. Sophomore Jake Weidert placed first in the the 200 fly (1:53.48) and second in the 400 IM. Weidert and Storz were joined by senior Jason Garman and junior Guy Fulfer on UW's winning 800 free relay team. Rounding out the first-place finishers for the Cowboys was senior Buddy Boysen, who set a new meet record in the 100 fly, winning the event with a time of 50.09. Other noteable performances by the Cowboys were turned in by Fulfer in the 100 free (second) and the 200 free (third) and Garman in the 50 free (third). The Cowgirls had many outstanding performances as well at the meet. Sophomore transfer Mabry Fiddler won the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.17. Fiddler also placed second in the 400 IM and fourth in the 200 IM. UW's women took three of the top five spots in the 100 breast with sophomore Missy Lewis placing first in a time of 1:08.55. She was followed by teammate Crystal Mecham, only a freshman, in second. Mecham also placed third in the 200 breast. Sophomore Jody Riskowski placed third in the 100 back and sophomore Lauren Colaric finished third on the one-meter springboard.
Cowpoke Pentathlon (Oct. 13): The Wyoming swimming and diving teams competed in their annual pentathlon meet. The winner was determined by adding up the times of five different events. Senior Buddy Boysen won the men's race with a combined time of 4:35.74.
Auburn transfer Mabry Fiddler paced all Cowgirl swimmers, winning the pentathlon with a combined time of 5:14.12. Fiddler just edged junior Jennifer Schurz, who placed second with a time of 5:14.92.
