LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming head swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson has announced the signing of seven student-athletes to national letters of intent to attend the University of Wyoming. Two of the signees will join the team in January 2000, and the remainder will join the team in the fall of 2000.

Lauren Bush, Sprint Freestyle/Backstroke, Fresno, California:

As a junior at Clovis West High School, Bush was a junior national qualifier in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and the 100 and 200 backstrokes. She recently competed at the U.S. Open in San Antonio, Texas, Dec. 3-5. Bush also competes on the Clovis Swim Club team. She is an honor student at Clovis West and is interested in a career in nursing.

TJ's comments - "Lauren is a great addition to our program. She is a very gifted swimmer. She has great range in freestyle from the 50 to the 500 and is a very strong backstroker.”"

Other schools recruiting Bush were Oregon State, Purdue and Washington State.

Katie Haywood, Sprint Freestyle/Backstroke, Fort Collins, Colorado:

Haywood has qualified for USA Swimming’s Junior National Championships in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and the 100 backstroke. She has also been the captain of her high school team for the past three season's and has been a Colorado state finalist the past three years. Haywood attends Fort Collins High School and also swims for the Fort Collins area swim team. Haywood’s sister Anne, is a freshman on the Cowgirl swim team.

TJ's comments - "We are very excited to have Katie join her sister Anne in our program. She is a gifted athlete and will improve immensely."

Colorado State and Northern Colorado also recruited Haywood.

Jarred Kintz, Distance Freestyle, Jacksonville, Florida:

Kintz is currently attending Mandarin High School and also swims with the Beaches Swim Club in Jacksonville. He is a junior national qualifier in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle events.

TJ's comments - "Jarred benefits from being coached by former Olympian Mike Heath, who said he feels Jarred has tremendous talent and potential to continue to improve. He will come here contribute immediately." Johnson said about Kintz.

Other schools interested in Kintz were Alabama, Auburn and Washington.

Janelyn Lilly, Backstroke/Freestyle, Loveland, Colorado:

Lilly is a junior national qualifier in the 200 backstroke. She attends Loveland High School and also swims for the Loveland Swim Club. She will add depth in the freestyle events as well.

TJ's comments - "Janelyn will be one of our stronger backstrokers. She has great range in the 100 and the 200, and will be able to add depth to our freestylers."

Lilly was also recruited by Kansas and LSU.

Ashley Mallett, Butterfly/Individual Medley/ Distance Freestyle, Camas, Washington:

Mallett is the 1999 Oregon State Champion in the 1000 freestyle. She is also a junior national qualifier in the 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley. Mallett also swims for the Mount Hood Swim Team.

TJ's comments - "Ashley continues to improve from the reports I get from her fall meets, and has swam well early in the season. She is very versatile and we will utilize this at many meets."

Other schools recruiting Mallett were the University of Hawaii and the University of Pacific.

Lindsey and Ryan Springer, Sprint Freestyle, Cheyenne, Wyoming:

The Springer’s graduated last spring and will join the Cowgirl swim team in January, 2000. Lindsey was a finalist a the 1997 and 1998 Wyoming high school state swimming championships in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. She was also an All-State selection in ‘97 and ‘98.

Ryan specializes in the sprint freestyle events and the backstroke. She also was a state finalist and All-State selection in 1997 and 1998. Both were also state finalists in track and field in high school and were voted Athletes of the Year at Cheyenne East in 1996 and 1997.

TJ's comments - "Lindsey and Ryan will bring added depth to our sprint group," said Johnson. "They are tremendously talented athletes with considerable capacity for improvement."
