Paul Barrett is entering his 18th year as the throws coach for the University of Wyoming track and field program. The 2011-12 campaign mark's Barrett's 12th year back at UW after spending two years coaching the throws at the University of Kentucky and one year at the University of Colorado. Barrett previously coached at Wyoming from 1991-1997.

Barrett has coached 16 All-Americans and 22 conference champions while at Wyoming. He has also had 36 conference runner-ups and a total of 92 all-conference (top three) award winners. Barrett's athletes have set 35 UW records during his tenure. Top athletes coached by Barrett at Wyoming include: Ryan Butler, who was the 1996 NCAA champion in the 35-pound weight throw (71-1 1/2);
All-American Matt Spears in the shot put (61-5 1/2);
All-American Jason Hammond in the 35-pound weight throw (69-1 1/2), hammer (221-1) and shot put (61-10 1/4);
All-American Andrea Batt in the javelin (168-8), shot put (53-4 1/4), discus (167-8) and the 20-pound weight throw (64-10 1/2);
Olympic Trials competitor and UW school record-holder Kate Burton in the hammer (209-8), 20-pound weight throw (63-11 1/2), and discus (158-5);
All-American Julie Thomas in the 20-pound weight throw (64-2 1/4) and hammer (190-9);
All-American Zack Schaefer in the 35-pound weight throw (68-6) and hammer (213-10);
All-American Kyle Herl in the hammer (219-10), 35-pound weight throw (67-5 1/2), shot put (59-11 3/4);
Conference champ Shannon Popp in the hammer (196-10) and the 20-pound weight throw (64-4);
All-American Jake Shanklin in the 35-pound weight throw (71-10 1/4) and the hammer (219-11).

While at the University of Kentucky (1997-1999), he coached two-time All-American Matt Kavanaugh, who placed seventh in the hammer (221-4) at the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Kavanaugh was the third-best American finisher in that event.

Barrett competed at the college level for Washington State University, where he was a Pac-10 finalist in the hammer throw and consistent dual-meet scorer for the Cougars in the discus and javelin, as well. Prior to his Washington State career, Barrett competed for Spokane Community College. While there, he was a two-time NWAACC conference champion in the discus, as well as a one-time champion in the hammer throw, qualifying him as a three-time Juco All-American. Barrett stays competitive by competing in Masters Track and Field competitions. In a competition in April 2003, he set an American record in the Throws Pentathlon for the age 35-39 group, which currently is ranked eighth all-time in the World All-Time Rankings. The throws pentathlon consists of five events, including hammer throw, shot put, discus, javelin, and 35-pound weight throw. Barrett's score of 3,783 points eclipsed the mark of 3,762, set by Dean Crouser of Oregon in 1998. Barrett recently won the 2009 and 2010 USA Masters Throws Pentathlon Champs for the age 40-44 group.

Barrett graduated from Washington State University in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in sport management. He has two children, daughters Kala (18) and Kelsey (13).
