UW Track Competes Strong in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. -
Complete Results in PDF Format Four University of Wyoming track and field athletes entered their names in the UW all-time top-10 list at the Husker Invite on Friday in Lincoln, Neb. "We had a fairly nice day today, but didn't have very many qualify for the finals," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "We had a lot of personal bests but are competing against some very tough competition." Freshman Brandon Douglass, ran the fourth-best time in UW history in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.34, and finished 19th overall. Along with Douglass entering the top-10, were Cowgirl juniors Afiya Walker in the 400-meter dash, Emily Byra and Francis Gipson in the 5,000-meter run. Walker ran a time of 55.94, which was good for sixth-best all-time, and qualified for the finals to be run on Saturday. Byra and Gipson ran the ninth and tenth-best times in the 5,000-meter run with respective times of 17:58.73 and 18:14.16. Senior Jennifer Schmitz will join Walker in the finals on Saturday in the 60-meter hurdles with her eighth-place time of 8.78. "I felt like we took a step forward today and we will see what we can do tomorrow," said Yentes. Action will continue Saturday in Lincoln, Neb., along with the rest of the Cowboys and Cowgirls competing at the New Mexico Classic, in Albuquerque, N.M.
