After a rain soaked morning at day one of the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Wyoming Cowgirl senior Kate Burton finished the qualifying round of the hammer throw in eighth place, putting her in the finals on Friday, June 13th.

Burton finished with a toss of 201' 5", which was good for eighth out of 29 competitors. Brittany Riley, of Southern Illinois is in the lead after day one with a toss of 211' 7". The top 12 move onto the finals on Friday and a chance to be crowned NCAA Champion.

In three throws, Kate had her only mark on her very first throw, on her next two she went for the fences and ended up fouling twice.

"Kate did a great job today in getting through to the finals," said UW throws coach Paul Barrett. "Today can sometimes be more stressful than the finals, but she got through and now we look forward to Friday."

The finals for the hammer throw will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, June 13th. Live results can be found at www.trackshark.com. At the conclusion of the hammer throw the top eight will be named All-American.
