June 12, 2004
Austin, Texas -- For the second consecutive outdoor season, UW's Shauna Smith captured All-American honors in the 400 meter hurdles, Saturday at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. Smith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., placed third in the finals with a career best time of 55.54 seconds. The time breaks her own Cowgirl and Mountain West Conference record of 55.63 seconds, which she set Friday in the preliminaries of the the event. Sheena Johnson of UCLA took the top spot with a time of 53.54 seconds followed by Lashinda Demus of South Carolina, 54.22 seconds. "We are extremely proud of her," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "She got off to a bad start and got behind. Then, she turned it on and passed about four people the last half of the race. She is a true competitor and really go after it. We are looking forward to bigger and better things for Shauna." Smith is now a three-time NCAA All-American. She earned the honors earlier this year at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships by placing sixth in the 400 meter dash. Last season, she placed seventh at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400 meter hurdles.
