High School... Derner lettered four years in track and three in cross country while attending Waterford Union. In cross country, he was named Racine County Runner of the Year twice and Southern Lakes Conference Runner of the Year three times. He holds several school records in both track and cross country and was team captain of both squads. He was a National Honor Society member and senior class president.

Personal... Derner was born June 14 in Burlington, Wis., to Tim and Mary Derner. He has a brother, Ethan, and plans to major in international studies. He also considered the University of Minnesota and Bradley.
