Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming cross country teams opened up their 2003 season at home Friday by hosting the Wyoming Open Cross Country Meet at Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie.

Colorado State's men and women took the team titles as both teams placed four runners in the top ten. Moses Tum from Colorado at Colorado Springs won the men's four mile race with a time of 20:56. Winning the women's 2.5 mile and running unattached was Nicole Feest posting a time of 14:19.

The Cowboys placed four runners in the top 20 spots, including one in the top ten. Leading the Cowboys was sophomore Brian Knight (6th, 20:48). Other Cowboys in the top 20 were senior Jason Delaney (11th, 22:23), junior Kyle Cheesbrough (18th, 23:11), and sophomore Jeremey Thompson (19th, 23:12). The Cowboys finished 3rd with 61 total team points.

The Cowgirls placed two runners in the top 10 spots, and four in the top 20. Leading the Cowgirls were junior Jennifer Thompson (7th, 14:33), and junior Natalie Kean (10th, 14:51). Other cowgirls in the top 20 were sophomores Christine Michael (14th, 15:12), and Elena Helmerick (16th, 15:15). The Cowgirls ran their way to a third place finish in the open with 60 total points.

"This was an awareness meet for us," said Wyoming head cross country coach Jim Sanchez. "We're not really concerned with team scores, I could see that the effort was there and we're only going to get better. Big improvements don't happen overnight."

 

 

The Wyoming cross country teams will compete next on September 20th at the Woody Greeno Invite in Lincoln, Neb.
