Wyoming Cross Country Teams Begin 2002 Season

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming cross country teams opened up their 2002 season at home Friday hosting the Wyoming Open Cross Country Meet at Jacoby Golf Course in Laramie. Colorado State's men and women took the team titles as both teams placing four members in the top five positions. CSU's Mike Nicks won the men's 4-mile race with a time of 21:42. Fellow teammate Jennifer Kintzley of CSU won the women's 4-kilometer race with a time of 15:03. The Cowboys placed four runners in the top 20 spots. Freshman Brian Knight led the Cowboys with an 8th place finish with a time of 22:33 followed by freshman Troy Hernandez (12th, 22:57), freshman Brian Harnisch (16th, 23:12), and sophomore Amasa Mecham (17th, 23:15). Other Cowboy finishers were junior Joel Hess (30th, 24:19), freshman Mark Pieper (37th, 24:34), and freshman Chris Schabron (39th, 24:37) As a team the Cowboys finished 3rd out of five teams with 61 points. Wyoming's women finished 3rd out of six teams with 68 points. The Cowgirls were paced by sophomore Ashley Mecham who placed 11th with a time of 15:56. Other Cowgirl finishers were sophomore Natalie Kean (13th, 16:02), sophomore Jennifer Thompson (19th, 16:26), freshman Elena Helmerick (23rd, 16:40), freshman Kristen Brauneis (31st, 16:54), freshman Emerald Reid (32nd, 16:55), sophomore Marina Latchininsky (46th, 18:01), freshman Amber Barlow (51st, 18:43), freshman Meridith Furtney (53rd, 18:51), and sophomore Amy Curkendall (57th, 19:41). "As early as it is in the season it is too early to start comparing ourselves against other teams," said Wyoming head cross country coach Jim Sanchez. "Right know we are not concerned with the times because of how different each course is, so the only thing we are worried about is getting these kids ready for courses more difficult than Jacoby."
