LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Last Saturday, Wyoming's head cross country coach Randy Cole was named 2004 Moutain West Conference Women's Coach of the Year after the Cowgirl's third place finish at the conference championships in San Diego, Calif. Cole received this award after only one year with the program. It is first time this achievement has been awarded to a Wyoming cross country coach since 1990.

Cole led the Cowgirls to an outstanding season. They would finish every meet in at least third place or higher against a very challenging schedule. The Cowgirls competed in meets such as the Rocky Mountain Shoot-out where they finished third behind Colorado, who is currently ranked third in the nation. Another challenging meet for the UW harriers was the Chile Pepper Invitational where they had their best showing as a team placing third behind two current Top-20 teams, Arkansas(#18) and SMU(#12). Then there was this last weekend at the conference championships, where the Cowgirls marked their best finish since being affiliated with the MWC. Last weekend's finish was the best outcome in the conference since 1990, when the Cowgirls placed second in the WAC.

"It's a nice recognition by your peers, but it is more important to see what the girls did last weekend," said University of Wyoming's head cross country coach Randy Cole when asked about receiving this award. "This award is not just a reflection of me, but the entire program, athletes, and my assistant Kristen Detweiler Thomas."

Coach Cole and the Cowgirls travel down to Fort Collins, Colo. for the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday, November 13. The race will be held at Collindale Golf Course at 11 a.m. for the women and 12:15 p.m. for the men.
