LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Wyoming senior Jennifer Thompson will compete Monday at the 2004 NCAA Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. This marks the first time that any Wyoming runner has qualified for nationals since 1989.

The Cheyenne native qualified for nationals last weekend at the Mountain Regional Meet when she placed 11th overall with a personal best time of 21:08 at 6,000 meters. Only the top 25 in the meet qualified for nationals. Thompson has steadily performed better each week of the season and led the Cowgirls in every race. She will look to have her best race yet in her last cross country meet as a Cowgirl.

"It is an amazing feat to qualify for nationals coming out of the very tough Mountain Region," said UW cross country coach Randy Cole. "Jennifer has experienced a steady progression over the last few years and she is a very tough competitor.

"Not only is this situation good for Jennifer, but it is also a springboard for Wyoming cross country in the future and I thank her for everything she has done for this program."

The 6,000 meter race will be on Monday at 11:00 am (CST) in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
