Sidney Coles, who has served as a graduate assistant on Steve McClain’s staff the previous two seasons, was promoted to a full-time assistant coaching position during the summer of 2000.

A former NCAA Division I player himself, Coles began his career at the University of Memphis where he played for two seasons, 1992-93 and 1993-94. Following his sophomore season, he transferred to Marshall University. After sitting out one season, he played for the Thundering Herd in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. While at Marshall, Coles served as a team captain both seasons, and he ranked among the top five individuals in the Southern Conference in rebounds, assists and steals both years.

Coles completed his bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation at Marshall in 1998. His junior season at Marshall, he played for current University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan. In his senior season, he played for current Marshall head coach Greg White. A graduate of Greenbrier East High School in Lewisburg, W.Va., he was a standout in basketball, football and track. Coles will enter this season at the age of 26 (born Dec. 18, 1973), and is the son of Darlene White. He has one sister, Stacey Coles, and one brother, Bimbo.
