2005-06: Kevin Lewis returns as one of Wyoming's top perimeter players. Lewis was Wyoming's top three-point shooter as a junior, converting 42.1 percent (24 of 57) of his three-pointers. He also shot very well from the field overall, hitting 43.3 percent of his field goals (45 of 104). His scoring will be key for the Cowboys in his senior season. Lewis will be a top contender for either the starting shooting-guard or small-forward positions. With one year of Division I experience behind him, Lewis could have a big year his senior season. 2004-05: In his first season competing for the Cowboys, Lewis averaged 4.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. He had his best game as a Cowboy at Southern Illinois on Dec. 30, 2004, scoring 13 points vs. the Salukis in only 20 minutes of play. He had three double-figure scoring games in Mountain West play -- 10 points against Utah on Jan. 15 and 12 in each of the two meetings versus San Diego State. Junior College: Lewis completed his final year in junior-college playing the best basketball of his career. He led Compton CC to the 2004 California State Junior College Championship, and he was named the State Tournament Most Valuable Player. The Long Beach Telegram named him the Junior College Player of the Year in California. Lewis averaged 14.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game his sophomore season at Compton, while shooting 48 percent from the field and 41 percent from three-point range. Compton finished the season with a 17-8 record. It became only the third team in California Community College history to win three regional playoff games on the road to earn a spot in the state tournament, and was the first of those three teams to go on to win the state title. The Compton Tartars trailed by five points (33-38) at halftime of the state championship game, but turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, out-scoring American River Community College 49 to 39 in the final period on way to an 82-77 victory. In the state championship game, Lewis scored a team high 18 points, and grabbed a team best six rebounds. He shot 63.6 percent from the field (7 of 11) and hit an amazing 66.7 percent from three-point range (4 of 6). Lewis was coached in junior college by Damaine Powell. High School/Personal: Lewis played his prep basketball at Locke High School in Los Angeles, Calif. His senior season, he was named All-City. He scored a career high 47 points and pulled down a personal best 22 rebounds during his high school career. He played for Michael Crumrine and Michael Jackson at Locke High. Lewis is left-handed. Born June 5, 1984, he is the son of Paulette and Carl Lewis. He has one son of his own, Kevin Lewis Jr., born Feb. 2, 2004. Following his career at Compton CC, Lewis was recruited by DePaul, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Oklahoma and Pittsburgh. Lewis is studying social science. |
