2001-02 (Senior): Ronell Mingo (Pronounced: RON-L MING-o) started 10 of 30 games a year ago, including six of the last seven. He has added 15 pounds to his frame in the off-season, and worked very hard in off-season conditioning. Mingo gives the Cowboys a very active and athletic big man to go with all-conference front-court performers Josh Davis, Uche Nsonwu-Amadi and Ugo Udezue. Mingo also had a big event occur in his life this past year with the birth of his first son, Jaylon, on Feb. 23, 2001. 2000-01 (Junior): Mingo averaged 6.6 points and 4.1 rebounds for the Cowboys as a junior. But his biggest impact may have been on the defensive end of the court, where he ranked No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference in blocked shots, blocking 1.53 shots per game. He blocked a personal best six shots versus San Diego State on March 1, 2001, as he helped lead the Pokes to a 69-62 road victory. He also grabbed a personal high nine rebounds in that same game. His season scoring high came at Brigham Young on Feb. 15, 2001, when he scored 18 points. He scored in double figures seven times during the 2000-01 season. He played an average of 16.4 minutes per game for the season. In the last nine games of the season, he improved his averages to 20.7 minutes, 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. Junior College: He played two seasons at Compton Community College in Compton, Calif., where he earned First Team All-Southern California Athletic Conference honors as a freshman, leading his Compton College team in scoring, averaging 18 points per game. Mingo also averaged nine rebounds and three blocks as a freshman. He was injured for part of his sophomore season, but still led the conference in blocked shots, averaging 3.4 blocks per game. He also scored 17 points per game and pulled down seven rebounds as a sophomore, while shooting 56.0 percent from the field and 70.1 percent from the free-throw line. Mingo played for head coach Damien Powell at Compton Community College. High School/Personal: In high school, Mingo played for head coach Sam Sullivan at Fremont High School in Los Angeles, Calif. A First Team All-City selection, he averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots per game. He was also named his conference's Most Valuable Player, and was selected to a high school All-Star team that toured Japan. Played against current Wyoming teammate Chris McMillian in high school. Mingo is the proud father of one son, Jaylon, born Feb. 23, 2001. Mingo is the grandson of Jessie and Shadrack Mingo. His parents are Cynthia Williams and Cornell Mingo Sr. He has one older brother, Cornell Jr.; a younger sister, Chantel; and a younger brother, David. Mingo was also recruited out of junior college by Louisville, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Tulane, USC and Washington State. Born April 3, 1980, he is majoring in social science. |
