2000-2001 (Junior): Scottie Vines' versatile skills will make him a contender to start at either the shooting-guard or small-forward spots for the Wyoming Cowboys in his first season after transferring from the College of Eastern Utah. Vines may remind Wyoming fans of former Cowboy Anthony Blakes. Vines has a similar slashing offensive style, as did Blakes, and Vines is an outstanding overall athlete. His great athletic ability should fit perfectly into Wyoming's fast-paced attack. He has excellent leaping ability, he was the Alabama 6A State Champion in the high jump as a high-school senior, and he was also recruited by the likes of Florida State to play college football -- at wide receiver.
Junior College: Vines averaged 15.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game for the 1999-2000 season at the College of Eastern Utah. He shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from the three-point arc. Vines played two years for head coach Bryan Zollinger at Eastern Utah in Price, Utah. As a sophomore, Vines earned All-Scenic West Conference honors, and was named Eastern Utah's MVP. He led CEU to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 18 Tournament. Vines also served as team captain at Eastern Utah. High School/Personal: Originally from Alexander City, Ala., Vines averaged 26.4 points and 6.0 rebounds his senior season at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City where he was coached in basketball by head coach Paul Carney. An outstanding three-sport athlete in high school, Vines earned Regional MVP honors in basketball. He was a seven-foot high jumper on the track and field team, winning the 6A State Championship as a senior. Vines was also recruited by Florida State in football as a wide receiver after helping lead Benjamin Russell High to a second-place finish in the state championships. Born April 17, 1979, he is the son of Jeannie and Lucius Vines. He has two sisters, Sabrina and Cashya, and one brother Lucius Jr. Vines was also recruited by Kansas State, Texas A&M and UNLV coming out of junior college. He is majoring in social science at UW. |
