Cowboy Basketball Opens Season With Exhibition Victory Over Slovakia
Nov. 9, 2000 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's basketball team had no trouble in its first exhibition game of the season, downing the Slovakia Select team Thursday night 99-63 before 6,844 fans at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. Sophomore Marcus Bailey had a game-high 18 points to lead the Cowboys, shooting six-for-six from the field. Bailey also led the Pokes with seven rebounds. The game started a little sluggish, but eventually the Pokes began to pull away from the undermanned and overmatched Slovakian team taking a 44-28 lead with them into the half. Preseason All-Conference pick Josh Davis had a solid outing with 10 points and five boards. Redshirt junior Ugo Udezue returned to action after sitting out last season with a knee injury by chipping in four points and six rebounds. Junior point guard Chris McMillian led the Pokes with seven assists to go along with his 10 points. Six newcomers to the Wyoming program also had solid contributions in their first ever game in Cowboy uniforms. Redshirt sophomore Uche Nsonwu-Amadi blocked four shots, grabbed six rebounds and scored 11 points. Ronell Mingo, a transfer from Compton Community College, scored 13 points and had five rebounds in his Cowboy debut. Junior Scottie Vines scored 11, freshman David Rottinghaus had 10 points, junior Paris Corner scored eight and freshman Joe Ries chipped in four points. "This was a good experience for all the kids and they all learned something from tonight's game." said UW head basketball coach Steve McClain. "In the second half we started to get in a little bit of a flow, but it will take awhile for all these new guys to get used to playing with each other. "The veterans gave a good effort, but they knew we wanted to get the
young guys out there on the floor. I couldn't be more pleased with the
attitude of this team. They've worked hard, and I expect us to just get
better." McClain said.
