Email: bryanaw@uwyo.edu Bryan Applewhite will be entering his sixth season at the University of Wyoming and his 10th as a college coach when the 2008 season kicks off. Applewhite will be coaching the Cowboy running backs and fullbacks for the fifth season. His first season at Wyoming in 2003, he coached the UW tight ends. Applewhite rejoined his former head coach Joe Glenn at Wyoming. Applewhite played for Glenn at the University of Northern Colorado from 1994-98. The 2007 season saw Cowboy junior running back Devin Moore rush for 965 yards, falling just 35 yards shy of 1,000. Moore averaged 80.4 yards rushing per game as a junior to rank fifth in the Mountain West Conference and 58th in the NCAA. He returns in `08 along with fellow senior running back Wynel Seldon. Seldon will enter his senior season ranked No. 8 on the UW career rushing list, with 2,035 career rushing yards. Against TCU on Oct. 6, 2007, Moore and Seldon each rushed for 100 yards in a 24-21 win over the Horned Frogs. Moore ran for 135 yards on the day, and Seldon rushed for an even 100, becoming the first Wyoming running backs since 1995 to each rush for 100 yards or more in the same game. In 2006, UW ranked fifth in the Mountain West Conference in rushing (132.3 yards per game). Sophomore running back Seldon was ranked No. 7 in the league among individual rushers (55.5 ypg), and his fellow sophomore, Moore, ranked No. 9 (47.8 ypg). Wyoming's 2005 running attack was highlighted by a record-setting performance by Seldon. He ran for 871 yards as a freshman in `05, setting a new UW freshman rushing record. Seldon ranked No. 5 in the MWC in rushing and ranked No. 59 in the nation. Since 2006, Applewhite has served as a member of the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Minority Issues Committee. In 2007, he was named to the AFCA Assistant Coaches' Committee, and participated in the 2007 AFCA Coaches' Academy. Before coming to Wyoming, Applewhite spent four seasons as a member of the coaching staff at his alma mater, Northern Colorado, from 1999-2002. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at UNC in the 1999 season, coaching the Bear running backs under Glenn. Applewhite continued to coach the running backs as a full-time coach in 2000 when Kay Dalton became the head coach. Applewhite helped coach an offense that ranked fourth in Division II in total offense in 2002 (362.1 yards per game) and ranked sixth in the nation in rushing offense (127.8 yards per game). Over his four years coaching the Bear running backs, Applewhite coached two All-Region running backs, including back-to-back North Central Conference single-season rushing leaders. In 1999 and 2002, Applewhite coached Northern Colorado teams that won North Central Conference Championships and advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The 2002 UNC team made it all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. As a fullback from 1994-98, Applewhite played on teams that won two NCAA Division II National Championships (1996 and `97), advanced to the Division II Playoffs four consecutive years (1995-98) and won two North Central Conference titles (1997 and `98). He earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Northern Colorado in 1998, and completed his master of arts, also from UNC, in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration in 2001. While at UNC, Applewhite served as a teaching assistant in the psychology department, and as a member of the university's student-athlete advisory council. Applewhite is a native of Brighton, Colo., where he attended Brighton High School. He and his wife, Rachelle, have two daughters, Morgan and Skylar. "Bryan is someone I have a great admiration and respect for as a player, being part of our two national championship teams at Northern Colorado," Glenn said. "As a young coach, he started with us at Northern Colorado, and he remained there for three years, while we were at Montana. It's great to have him back on our staff here at Wyoming. Bryan is a very loyal guy. He brings a real positive attitude to the staff and the team. If I could say only one thing about Bryan, he is a winner. He's a winner at life and a winner at this game. He has a tremendous love for people, the game of football and the West. He's a Cowboy at heart, and is a great fit for the University of Wyoming." Applewhite will recruit Colorado, Southern Kansas and Oklahoma. |
