Garrett Bliss was named a Second Team 4A All-State linebacker by the Rocky Mountain News and was an Honorable Mention All-State Class 4A selection by The Denver Post. He recorded over 100 tackles from his middle linebacker position in nine games as a senior. As a junior, Bliss also earned Second Team All-State honors. He achieved All-Southwestern Conference Second Team honors as a freshman, and was a First Team honoree as a sophomore, junior and senior. His Durango High football team posted a 6-3 record in 2003. Between his junior and senior seasons, he was invited to and participated in the U.S. Army Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, which invites the Top 200 high school juniors together for an All-Star game. He excelled in football, baseball and track at Durango High School. Bliss was a pitcher in baseball, and was a shot putter on the track team. He played for head coach Shane Voss at Durango.

The son of Darlene and Steven Bliss, he was also recruited by Colorado, Missouri, New Mexico and Utah.
