UW This Season: Leo Caires received a second chance to play his final season at UW after receiving a medical hardship from the NCAA. Caires broke a bone in his lower leg in the second game of the 2000 season and missed the remainder of the year. This past spring, he was elected by his teammates as a captain for the second consecutive season. He finished spring training as a starter at linebacker. He has excellent speed. Originally came to Wyoming as a walk-on, but through his hard work he later earned a scholarship. 2000: Was the starter at weak-side linebacker in Wyoming's first two games, but suffered a broken leg in the second game of the season at Texas A&M and missed the remainder of the season. 1999: Played in all 11 games for the Cowboys -- 10 at weak-side linebacker and one (Idaho) at strong -side linebacker. Finished the year with 22 unassisted tackles and eight assisted. He also posted three tackles for losses of 17 yards and two sacks for 16 years in losses. He had one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry. Became one of the team's top special teams players. 1998: Played in all 11 games for the Pokes, mostly on special teams. He was also credited with a half sack against TCU. High School: A two-sport letterman at Maui (Hawaii) High School in football and rodeo. Earned First Team All-State honors in football as a senior at both linebacker and tight end. He was the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior. A terrific rodeo performer, was the state champion in steer wrestling, as well as bull riding, and was the area All-Around Cowboy. His Hawaii livestock judging team was the state champion. Personal: Born Leo K. Caires on August 16, 1978 in Haiku, Hawaii. The son of Joseph Caires. He graduated in May of 2001 with a bachelor's degree in animal science.
