UW This Season: Luke Chase is entering his third season as a starter for the Cowboy Defense. He has started 22 of 35 career games, and has never missed a game throughout his college career. Chase will team with fellow inside linebacker Ward Dobbs to form one of the best inside-linebacking tandems in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. 2006: Chase ranked sixth on the Wyoming Defense in tackles as a junior. He was credited with 44 total tackles, including three tackles for losses. Chase was a leader of a Wyoming Defense that ranked No. 9 in the nation in total defense, No. 8 in pass defense and No. 23 in rushing defense. He played a key role in Wyoming making a smooth transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme from a 4-3 alignment. His best individual games came against: Air Force (10 tackles), Utah (five tackles and one fumble recovery), New Mexico (five tackles) and UNLV (five tackles). He also had a key interception in a 24-0 shutout of Colorado State. He earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII honors for the second straight year. He also achieved Academic All-Mountain West Conference accolades for the third consecutive season. 2005: Chase ranked fourth on the Cowboy squad in tackles with 59 total tackles his sophomore season. He also led UW in recovered fumbles, with two on the season, and ranked No. 5 in the Mountain West Conference in recovered fumbles. Chase started seven of 11 games in `05. The only games he didn't start were when the Cowboys began games in a nickel package -- with a fifth defensive back. His best individual games came against: Air Force (10 tackles), BYU (9 tackles) and TCU (8 tackles). He made a slight position change in 2005 as he moved from the strongside linebacker spot to middle linebacker. In 2005, he earned Second Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII honors in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). For the second consecutive year, he achieved Academic All-Conference honors. 2004: An outstanding and aggressive tackler, Chase ranked seventh on the Wyoming squad as a redshirt freshman in `04 with 45 total tackles. He also ranked fourth in tackles for losses with 7.5 for 14 yards. He suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee versus UCLA in the 2004 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl victory, but the injury didn't require surgery and healed in time for him to participate in spring practice in 2005. He played in all 12 games for the Pokes as a redshirt freshman, and started three at strongside linebacker in place of Austin Hall, who suffered a high ankle sprain versus Texas A&M. Chase started his first career game against Ole Miss on Sept. 25, 2004. He made the most of that starting opportunity being credited with seven tackles -- three of which were tackles for losses -- in a 37-32 Wyoming victory. He also broke up one pass versus the Rebels. Chase started his second consecutive game vs. Louisiana-Monroe, and he started his third game against Air Force. He also made a key play in the season opener vs. Appalachian State as he blocked a punt that was recovered by UW's Derrick Martin for a touchdown. He achieved Academic All-Conference honors in his redshirt freshman year. Chase earned his first varsity letter. 2003: Redshirted. High School: Chase was selected an All-State Class 3A linebacker in 2002. He also earned All-Conference honors as a fullback and linebacker both his junior and senior seasons. His senior season, Chase was voted his team's Most Valuable Player, and was a team captain. He was Windsor's leading tackler both his junior and senior seasons with 149 total tackles each year. In 2002, he had 60 solo tackles, 89 assists, four quarterback sacks, three fumble recoveries and one interception which he returned 50 yards for a touchdown. Chase carried the ball 114 times as a fullback for 755 yards and 13 touchdowns. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry. He led Windsor High School to the Class 3A State Playoffs his senior season, losing in the first round to Centaurus. A three-year starter, he was also part of Windsor's 2000 squad that advanced to the state semifinals his sophomore season. An outstanding wrestler, Chase placed third at state as a sophomore, and finished second his junior and senior seasons. He was a team captain in wrestling, as well as football. His high school football coach was Doug Appel. He was also recruited by Boise State, Colorado, Colorado State, Kansas, Missouri, UNLV, Oregon, Oregon State and San Diego State.
