UW This Season: Luke Donovan has earned his place among the top punters in the nation entering the 2003 season. The Sporting News has ranked him as the No. 7 best punter in the country in the magazine's 2003 preview issue. Donovan enters the 2003 season with the eighth best punting average in the nation among returning punters -- 43.0 yards per punt in 2002. 2002: Donovan averaged 43.0 yards per punt as a junior, and ranked No. 14 in the country in punting average. The Ray Guy Award Committee placed him on their preseason watch list in 2002. Donovan posted the second best punting average in the Mountain West Conference, and earned Honorable Mention All-MWC honors. For the second consecutive year, Donovan achieved Academic All-MWC, MWC Scholar-Athlete and Verizon Academic All-District VII. Nearly 50 percent of his punts were not returned. Out of 58 punts, Donovan kicked 11 inside the opponents' 20-yard line, forced opponents to fair catch nine others and kicked seven more punts into the endzone for a total of 27 out of 58 punts, or 46.6 percent, that were not returned. He saved his two best games for the final two games of his junior season. Against Utah, Donovan punted six times for a 48.0 average, with one punt over 50 yards. In the 2002 season finale at New Mexico, he punted five times for a 50.4 average, and had three punts over 50 yards. 2001: He had a successful season in his first year as UW's starting punter. Donovan ranked 52nd in the nation in punting average (40.65 yards per punt). In the classroom, Donovan was outstanding, earning Academic All-District VII honors. In addition to his 40.65-yard average, Donovan placed 10 of his 57 punts inside the 20-yard line. He forced opponents to fair catch another 11 punts, and he had two more land in the end zone, therefore 23 of his 57 punts or 40.4 percent were not returned. His long punt of the season was a 70-yard effort against Furman. Donovan also booted a punt for 58 at Utah, and had two 57 yarders against Colorado State and UNLV. In addition to Academic All-District VII honors, he earned Academic All-Conference and Conference Scholar-Athlete honors. 2000: Squadman. 1999: Redshirted. High School: A five-sport letterman at Spearfish High School in football, wrestling, baseball, track and basketball. Earned All-Conference and All-State honors as a football senior and served as team captain. As a junior, Spearfish won the South Dakota State Championship. His football coach was Mark Kool.
