UW This Season: Fred Givens returns for his senior season after being the starter on the Cowboy defensive line for each of the past two seasons with fellow 2009 seniors John Fletcher, at defensive tackle, and Mitch Unrein, at defensive end. The unsung member of the D-Line, Givens clogs up the middle for Wyoming's outstanding 3-4 defense. 2008: Givens was credited with 45 total tackles as a junior. He also recorded 2.5 tackles for losses and had two pass breakups at the line of scrimmage. Givens recorded five or more tackles in five games in `08. His best game of the season was a 12-tackle performance versus Air Force. He was credited with six tackles and a pass breakup at BYU, and had five tackles in three games -- vs. Ohio, vs. North Dakota State and at UNLV. Givens started 10 of the 11 games he played in for Wyoming in 2008, missing one game versus Utah due to injury and agreeing not to start the season finale against Colorado State so that senior Rob Hollway could start his final college game. 2007: Givens stepped into the starting lineup and made an immediate impact. He recorded 45 total tackles, including one sack and four tackles for losses. He had three games in which he recorded a season high seven tackles -- versus Utah State, Ohio and Colorado State. Givens also made six tackles versus New Mexico, including two tackles for losses and a half sack. 2006: As a redshirt freshman, Givens saw action in all 12 Wyoming games. He was credited with 12 total tackles -- seven solos and five assists -- and had a half sack. The Oklahoma native backed up senior Jake Mayes at noseguard. Givens earned his first varsity letter. In his first spring drills in `06, Givens showed marked improvement to land the backup spot behind senior Mayes. That was quite an accomplishment for a young player who was entering his first season competing for the Cowboys after redshirting as a true freshman in 2005. 2005: Redshirted. High School: Fred Givens earned First Team All-State in Class 5A his senior season at Chickasha High School in Chickasha, Okla. Givens also was named the Oklahoma Southwest Region Defensive Player of the Year in Class 5A. He was credited with 82 total tackles, 18 quarterback sacks and recovered three fumbles for the 2004 season. He was selected his team's Most Valuable Player, and four times earned Defensive Player of the Game honors. As a team captain his senior season, he let Chickasha to a 7-4 record and the first round of the state playoffs. His junior year, Givens recorded 71 tackles, including 13 sacks, and he was just as productive as a sophomore, making 70 tackles -- 10 of which were sacks. His sophomore season, he was part of a team that posted a 13-1 record and advanced to the semifinals of the state playoffs. Over his three-year career, Givens helped lead Chickasha to a 26-9 (.743) record. Givens was just as accomplished as a high school wrestler. He finished third at state as a junior, and also enjoyed a great senior season. Givens was coached in high school by Shannon Watford. Personal: Born May 9, 1987, he is the son of Faith and Fred Givens. Givens cousin, Robert Sykes, played football at Southeastern Oklahoma. Givens was also recruited by New Mexico and SMU. He is majoring in communications. |
