UW This Season: Ian Hetrick will be competing with junior Karsten Sween and sophomore Dax Crum for the starting quarterback spot when 2008 fall practice begins. The three QBs were listed as co-starters at the conclusion of `08 spring drills. Hetrick saw action in 10 games as a junior and started one versus UNLV. A senior, he is the most mobile of Wyoming's quarterbacks. 2007: Hetrick completed 19 of 41 pass attempts his junior season for 211 yards. He also rushed for 22 yards on 16 carries during the season. His best individual games came against Air Force, completing six of eight passes for 89 yards, and in his one career start against UNLV, completing five of 16 passes for 64 yards. He made a dramatic rise up the Wyoming depth chart in the spring of 2007, earning the backup position behind returning starter Karsten Sween. Hetrick made the most of his opportunity during spring drills when both Sween and senior quarterback Jacob Doss were forced to miss time with injuries. In the final 2007 spring scrimmage, Hetrick completed 20 of 31 passes (64.5 percent) for 269 yards, and he threw three touchdown passes, including a 71-yarder into the wind to wide receiver Hoost Marsh. 2006: Hetrick redshirted after transferring from Santa Rosa Junior College in California. With Jacob Doss and Karsten Sween sharing time at QB in `06, the Wyoming coaching staff had the luxury of redshirting Hetrick. That also gave him the luxury of adjusting to Division IA football while learning the Cowboy offense. He also spent the spring learning to take snaps under center for the first time since high school. As a two-year starter at Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Calif., Hetrick ran an offense that was run completely from a shotgun formation. Junior College: Hetrick guided Santa Rosa, to an 8-3 record in 2005. As a team captain, he engineered Santa Rosa's no-huddle, spread offense which ranked No. 1 in the state of California and No. 1 in the nation among junior college teams in passing offense (404.1 yards per game) and No. 6 in total offense (460.7 yards per game). Individually, he completed 63.6 percent of his passes, threw for 3,104 yards and 30 touchdown passes in 2005. He ranked No. 2 in California in pass completions (21.3 per game), No. 5 in total offense (268.9 yards per game) and No. 8 in passing efficiency, with a quarterback rating of 151.3. Hetrick also led Santa Rosa to a 35-12 win over Fresno City College in the Producers Dairy Bowl, completing 36 of 43 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while earning Most Valuable Player honors in the game. As a sophomore at Santa Rosa, Hetrick earned All-America, All-State, All-Northern California and All-NORCAL Conference honors. Hetrick is the second Santa Rosa JC quarterback to play for the Cowboys. Former Cowboy Craig Burnett, who led Wyoming to the 1987 Western Athletic Conference Championship and an '87 Holiday Bowl appearance, also played at Santa Rosa Junior College. Hetrick played for head coach Keith Simons at Santa Rosa. High School: Hetrick played his high school football at Vintage High School in Napa, Calif. At Vintage High School, he was a two-year starter in a triple-option offense. As a senior, he threw for over 1,400 yards and ran for approximately 600 yards, while throwing 16 touchdowns and rushing for four more, earning First Team Monticello Empire All-Conference honors. Hetrick was elected a team captain his junior and senior seasons. His high school coach was Les Franco.
