Don Julian is beginning his fifth season with the University of Wyoming football program -- his fourth season as Director of Football Operations for the Cowboys. A University of Wyoming graduate, Julian spent his first season of 2002 as the running backs coach on then head coach Vic Koenning's staff. When Joe Glenn was named head coach on Dec. 12, 2002, Julian was the one member of the coaching staff that Glenn retained, moving him into the role as Director of Football Operations. Julian returned to the University of Wyoming in 2002 from Riverton High School in Riverton, Wyo., where he was the head football coach for nine seasons. Julian had an outstanding record as a high school coach in the state of Wyoming. During his time as head coach at Riverton High School from 1993 to 2001, Julian led Riverton to four Wyoming 3A State Titles in 1994, `97, `98 and `99. He was honored by the Wyoming Coaches' Association as the 3A Football Coach of the Year in each of those four championship seasons. Following the 2001 season, Julian was selected as the Wyoming Coach of the Year by the National Federation Coaches' Association. Among the players he coached at Riverton High School were Ryan McGuffey and his older brother Corte McGuffey. Ryan (McGuffey) ranks No. 4 in Wyoming school history in career receptions (231) and No. 5 in career receiving yards (2,679). Ryan McGuffey signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams in the spring of 2004 and is currently in law school at the University of Wyoming. Corte (McGuffey) went on to play quarterback for Joe Glenn and his staff at the University of Northern Colorado. He was UNC's starting quarterback on the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championship team, and in his senior season of `99 won the Harlon Hill Award, symbolic of the NCAA Division II Player of the Year. A student-athlete himself at the University of Wyoming, Julian was a member of the Cowboy wrestling squad, and also competed on UW's rifle team. Julian participated in the UW honors program while in college, and he achieved Western Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete honors in 1988. He completed his bachelor's degree in education from Wyoming in December of 1989. Julian began his high school teaching and coaching career at Dean Morgan Junior High in Casper, Wyo., in the fall of 1990. He moved to Riverton High School in the fall of 1991, where he taught math. In addition to serving as head football coach at Riverton High School, he also served as the head wrestling coach for one year, and as an assistant for seven seasons. "Don Julian has quickly become one of my favorites," said Glenn. "I can understand why he was such a successful coach at the high school level. He is very intelligent, and I value his judgment. Don has been a great asset to our staff as we've made the transition to Wyoming. He has a critical role on our staff. His administrative skills, combined with his intelligence, will help us in so many ways you can't measure. I feel lucky to have him. He is an outstanding guy." A native of Kemmerer, Wyo., Julian and his wife Jeannie have three children -- Katelynn, Tyler and Emily. |
