UW This Season: Ben Smith made perhaps the most dramatic position change in the spring of 2007, switching from offensive center to noseguard. He enters his sophomore season of `07 listed No. 2 on the depth chart at noseguard behind fellow sophomore Fred Givens. His aggressive style of play led the Cowboy coaching staff to move him to defense. An outstanding all-around athlete. He received college scholarship offers in both football and wrestling. Smith continues the tradition of his family playing for the Cowboys. His older brother, Jeff, started on the offensive line for the Cowboys from 1996-98, and was co-captain for the Pokes in 1998. 2006: Smith played in one game in `06 -- versus Utah State in the season opener. He was a backup to Jason Karcher and Tim Bond at center for the Cowboys. Earned his first varsity letter. 2005: Redshirted. High School: Smith was an All-State and All-Region selection in Arizona as an offensive lineman his senior season. The younger Smith, like his older brother, played at Phoenix Christian High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Perhaps Smith's most impressive credential is that he is a winner. He was part of two State Championship football teams and two State Championship wrestling teams at Phoenix Christian. As a team captain in 2004, Smith helped lead Phoenix Christian to a 10-3 record and its second consecutive Arizona Class 2A State Championship in football. His junior season, Phoenix Christian posted a perfect 13-0 record on way to the State Championship. A nationally ranked wrestler, Smith won the Class 2A State Championship in the heavyweight division as a junior and senior, going undefeated for two consecutive seasons. During his senior season, he not only dominated his weight class, but was named the mid-season All-Star heavyweight wrestler in all classifications in the state of Arizona. He also ranked among the Top 12 in the nation. Smith was coached by head football coach Jim Rattay, who is the father of Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback Tim Rattay. Smith was also recruited by Northern Arizona and Purdue for football and by Nebraska for wrestling. Personal: Born Aug. 15, 1986, he is one of six children of Ruth Ann and Wesley Smith. In addition to his older brother, Jeff, playing for the Cowboys; his sister, Lydia, played volleyball at Taylor University and his sister, Bethany, played basketball at Southwestern College.
