UW This Season: Brett Smith graduated early from high school in December 2010, so that he could enroll at the University of Wyoming in January 2011 and participate in the Cowboys' 2011 spring drills. Smith took snaps with the first and second team last spring, and enters the fall listed No. 1 on the depth chart at quarterback. He will compete with fellow true freshman Adam Pittser during fall camp for the starting quarterback job.

High School: Brett Smith was named First Team All-State Class 6A by The Oregonian at the conclusion of his senior season at West Salem High School. Class 6A is the largest classification in the state of Oregon. He was also named the 2010 Gatorade Oregon Football Player of the Year. Smith was ranked as the No. 8 best recruit in the state of Oregon at all positions by SuperPrep magazine and Scout.com. His senior season, he completed 135 of 200 passes (67.5 percent) for 2,146 yards, 26 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also rushed for 855 yards on 114 carries and scored 22 rushing TDs. His junior season, Smith completed 91 of 146 passes (62.3 percent) for 1,555 yards, 16 TDs and only two interceptions, while rushing for 756 yards on 95 carries and scoring 12 rushing touchdowns. He also started as a sophomore, throwing for 1,260 yards, eight TDs and eight interceptions, while completing 85 of 150 passes (56.7 percent). Smith rushed the ball 93 times for 703 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. As a freshman, he completed 8 of 13 passes for 103 yards, threw two TD passes and had four rushing attempts for 10 yards. His career numbers include: 319 of 509 passes (62.8 percent) for 5,064 yards, 52 TDs, 15 interceptions, 306 rushing attempts for 2,324 yards and 44 rushing touchdowns. Among the school records he set include: career passing yards, career rushing yards, career scoring, career touchdown passes and career rushing TDs. He played for head coach Shawn Stanley.

Personal: The son of Kimi and Kevin Smith, he has one older brother, Kyle, a younger brother, Cade, and a younger sister, Ellie. His dad played football at the University of Oregon. Smith was also recruited by New Mexico State, Oregon State and San Jose State. He is majoring in communications at UW.
