UW This Season: Randy Tscharner is Wyoming's returning starter at middle linebacker. He did an outstanding job for the Cowboys in his first year in the program, and started all 12 games at the "MIKE" position. Tscharner ranked second on the team in tackles last season with 88. He ranked 12th in the Mountain West Conference, averaging 7.3 tackles per game. Tscharner was Wyoming's team leader in tackles for losses with 11. His experience will give the Cowboy defense a strong leader in the middle in 2004. 2003: Tscharner transferred to UW in the spring of 2003 from Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Calif. He participated in spring drills with the Cowboys, and won the starting spot. Tscharner proved he was a big hitter, who was quick to the ball and could make punishing tackles. He was second only to former Cowboy linebacker Tyler Gottschalk in tackles. Tscharner had 88 total tackles -- 45 solos and 43 assists. He had one and half quarterback sacks, a team leading 11 tackles for losses, forced one fumble, broke up a pass and blocked an extra point at Utah. Tscharner had three games in which he recorded double digits in tackles -- vs. Kansas (10), at Boise State (11) and at San Diego State (11). He also had big games against BYU (with seven tackles, four tackles for losses and one sack) and Colorado State (eight tackles, one tackle for a loss and a half sack). Santa Rosa JC: Tscharner was a First Team All-California Community College selection as a sophomore at Santa Rosa Junior College in the fall of 2002. He also earned All-Region I honors in California for the 2002 season. The Calistoga, Calif., native was named the Mid-Empire Conference's Most Valuable Player in 2002 while leading Santa Rosa to an 8-3 overall record and a 4-1 conference mark. Santa Rosa finished second in the Mid-Empire Conference and advanced to the CLO Bowl, where it defeated Feather River, 63-13, for its eighth victory of the season. In the final California Community College Regional Poll, Santa Rosa concluded the season ranked No. 9 in Northern California. Tscharner recorded 125 tackles, including 8.5 sacks his sophomore season. He also intercepted four passes and blocked four kicks. As a freshman at Santa Rosa, Tscharner also earned All-Conference honors. Tscharner's junior-college coach was Keith Simons. He was recruited by Arizona State, Portland State, San Jose State and TCU following his junior-college career. High School: At Calistoga High School, Tscharner twice earned All-Conference honors as a fullback, tight end and linebacker. He was coached in high school by Dan Conner. In addition to football, Tscharner also lettered four years in basketball and baseball, and he was involved in student government.
