UW This Season: Guy Tuell returns for the Cowboys as the starter at weakside linebacker in 2004. Tuell should be a leading All-Conference candidate in 2004. The senior also has an opportunity to break into the UW Career Top 10 in tackles before his playing days are over. He needs a big year to do it -- he is currently 89 tackles away from 10th place. But considering he had 69 tackles in 11 games last season, it is an attainable goal. He would need to average about two more tackles per game to reach the Top 10. He started 11 of 12 games on the weakside last season. The only game he didn't start on defense was the Air Force game when he suffered a deep thigh bruise covering the opening kickoff, and missed the remainder of the game. The past three seasons, he has started 30 out of 34 games for the Pokes at either linebacker or safety, including the last nine consecutive. Having a year under his belt at the linebacker spot should make him even more effective in his senior season. This year will mark the first time in Tuell's career that he has played the same position two consecutive years. He was a rover (third safety) his true freshman season of 2001, played strong safety as a sophomore and was moved to weakside linebacker as a junior.

2003: Tuell ranked third for the Cowboys in tackles with 69 -- 40 solos and 29 assists. He ranked No. 28 in the MWC in tackles, averaging 5.8 per game. Tuell also recovered one fumble, intercepted one opponent pass, had two tackles for losses and a half sack. His best individual games came against Kansas (11 tackles), at Boise State (13 tackles) and versus Montana State (nine tackles and an interception).

2002: Tuell ranked sixth on the team in tackles with 36 solo tackles and 20 assists for a total of 56 tackles. He ranked second on the team in forced fumbles (two), and was third on the squad in tackles for losses (five for a minus 16 yards). The Yuma, Colo., native also had one interception against Colorado State, which he returned for 17 yards, and he recovered one fumble. He started all 12 games for the Pokes at strong safety.

2001: He earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors as a true freshman in 2001 in voting by MWC head football coaches. Tuell continued the tradition of hard-hitting Cowboy safeties during his freshman season. Thrown right into the fire as a true freshman, after senior Al Rich was lost for the season due to injury, Tuell was inserted into the starting lineup at the rover position (a safety position). He started the final seven games of the 2001 season, and was extremely effective. Tuell tied for fifth on the team in tackles with 45. He tied for the team lead in fumble recoveries (two), had one interception, forced a fumble, had one pass deflection and was credited with one tackle for a loss for a minus one yard. His best game came against UNLV, where he made six solo tackles and had one assist for a total of seven tackles. He also intercepted a pass against the Rebels, recovered a fumble and had one pass deflection.

High School: A three-sport standout at Yuma High School in Yuma, Colo., Tuell played football, wrestled and ran track. He was a two-time All-State performer in football as a running back and strong safety. He rushed for 1,852 yards his senior season, setting a school record. Led his team to the state semifinals, where he gained over 200 yards rushing while playing with a broken hand. An outstanding wrestler, he qualified for the state tournament both his junior and senior seasons, placing second at 189 pounds as a senior. In track, he earned All-State honors three years. He was a four-time state qualifier and three-time state placer, competing in the triple jump, mile relay and 4 x 200 relay. Tuell was elected team captain of both his high school football and wrestling teams. Following his senior season, he participated in the Colorado All-State football game. An excellent student, he was a National Honor Society member, was named an All-America Scholar Athlete and achieved honor roll all four years of high school. He played for head football coach Rob Braaten at Yuma High School. Other schools he was recruited by included: Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Kansas, New Mexico State and Northwestern, as well as Ivy League members Cornell, Harvard, Princeton and Yale.

Personal: Born Feb. 21, 1982, his parents are Lyndell and Roger Tuell. He has one older brother, Trevor, and two older sisters, Kevann and Megan. His sister Kevann was a former athletic trainer for UW. Tuell is majoring in health sciences.
