UW This Season: Scottie Vines will play an important role for the Cowboys' aerial attack in 2002. Projected to begin the season No. 2 on the depth chart behind returning starter Brock Ralph at the X (outside) receiver slot. Vines will return both kicks and punts for Wyoming. An extremely athletic player who has tremendous leaping ability and quickness. 2001: Vines wore a uniform of a different type in 2001. After spending one season as a member of the UW basketball team, Vines moved over to the Cowboy football team in 2001. He was highly recruited to play football out of high school but chose to play basketball instead. Despite not playing football since high school, he had a very productive season on the gridiron, playing in all 11 of Wyoming's games, starting in five at wide receiver. He caught 27 passes for 550 yards and scored two touchdowns. Had his best game of the season against BYU, catching six balls for 157 yards and one TD. Was the teams fourth leading receiver, averaging 50.0 yards per game. Cowboys top punt returner, returning 18 punts for 108 yards. He blocked an extra point against Utah State to preserve a 43-42 win for the Pokes. 2000: Vines appeared in 17 of 30 games for the Cowboy basketball team, averaging 1.9 points per game and 1.3 rebounds. Junior College: Vines averaged 15.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game as a basketball player for the 1999-2000 season at Eastern Utah Community College. As a sophomore, Vines earned All-Scenic West Conference honors, and was named Eastern Utah's MVP. He led Eastern to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region 18 Tournament. Vines also served as team captain at Eastern Utah. High School: Originally from Alexander City, Ala., Vines was recruited by Florida State in football as a wide receiver after helping lead Benjamin Russell High to a second-place finish in the state championships. He earned Regional MVP honors in basketball, and he was a seven-foot high jumper on the track and field team, winning the 6A State Championship as a senior. Personal: Born April 17, 1979, he is the son of Jeannie and Lucious Vines. He is majoring in social science at UW.
