2006-07 (Redshirt Senior): Niel King had a solid start to his final year on the Cowboy Golf team and showed that he benefited from his redshirt season. He is a great teammate and should be a positive influence on the young Wyoming team. King saved his best golf for his final season as he shot a career best round of 67 (-4) at the District VII Fall Preview on his way to his top finish of the fall, 21st. The finish was the third top-25 placing of his career and his best 54-hole total at 212 (-1). His round of 67 was also the best 18 holes by a Cowboy during the fall season. Niel's stroke average of 75.06 is also the lowest of his career to date and was second best for UW during the first half of the season. 2005-06 (Senior): With the Cowboys boasting an upperclassmen-laden team, King used his redshirt season and spent the year improving his game and focusing on his degree. 2004-05 (Junior): King played in all 11 tournaments for the Cowboy team, averaging 77.06. For the second season in a row his best showing of the year came at the Air Force Falcon Invitational. The Wyoming native finished 11th of 80 golfers at the fall '04 event, with his season low mark of 70 coming in the final round. An excellent student, Niel was named Academic All-MWC for the third consecutive year. 2003-04 (Sophomore): King made dramatic improvement in his golf game during his second year as a Cowboy. He lowered his stroke average by nearly four full strokes from his freshman season to the end of his sophomore campaign. Niel averaged 75.62 strokes per round as compared to a 79.3 stroke average as a freshman. King recorded his first top 25 finish, placing seventh out of 97 competitors at the Air Force Falcon Invitational. His low round of the year also came at that AFA event, a 69 in the final 18. King played in 10 of 11 tournaments and earned Academic All-MWC honors for the second consecutive year. 2002-03 (Freshman): King competed in four of 11 tournaments as a true freshman. His low round as a freshman was a 74 in the first round of the UC Santa Barbara Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. He earned Academic All-MWC honors. High School: King was a three-time All-State golfer at Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyo. He captured the Wyoming individual state title as a senior, and he led his Campbell County team to a second place finish in the state championships. He medaled in every high school tournament he played in from his sophomore through senior seasons. King also won three Wyoming State Junior Amateur titles, including the 2001 Wyoming State Junior title. An accomplished basketball player, he earned 4A All-State honors in 2002, while his Campbell County team won the 4A State Championship. Following his senior year, he was selected to represent the state of Wyoming in the Montana-Wyoming and South Dakota-Wyoming All-Star basketball games. King was a three-time Presidential Academic Award recipient. King was also recruited by Colorado State, Colorado, New Mexico State and Washington State. He was coached in high school by Tom Schrupp. Personal: Born June 29, 1983, in Lander, Wyoming, he is the son of Lori and Kevin King. King is majoring in mechanical engineering. |
