Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming closed the curtain on the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Tournament Friday with a final round team score of 314 to move up one spot in the final standings.

The Cowboys finished the two-day tournament with a 54-hole score of 926 to finish 18th overall and leap ahead one position after opening the final around in 19th place. San Diego State won the tourney with three-round team total of 866 strokes on La Purisima Golf Course, home to the 1996 PGA Qualifying School Finals.

"The guys played hard," Cowboy coach Joe Jensen said. "It was tough weather, windy, and the course played long. But the kids played hard."

UW senior and Sheridan native Mike Urbatchka led the way Friday, firing a final round 75 to move up 11 spots and finish tied for 27th place with a total of 224 strokes. "Mike played good. He's put a couple solid tournaments in a row together," Jensen said.

Cowboy sophomore Mike Mezei wasn't far behind Urbatchka's pace, checking with a total of 226 after Friday's final round 77. "He played a pretty good tournament," Jensen said. "He had a lot of good holes."

Freshman Matthew Brunk posted a final score of 238, classmate Jonathan Shuss shot a three-round score of 241 and junior Kurt Kowaluk was one stroke behind at 242. Jason Higton of Pacific University fired a final round 74 to win the tourney with a four-under score of 212.

The Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate was hosted by the University of California-Santa Barbara and played at La Purisima Golf Course, which measure 6,603 yards and played to a par of 72.
