Cowboy Golf Team Finishes 18th At UC Santa Barbara Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
March 14, 2000 LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team faced 10 of the nation's Top 100 golf programs on Monday and Tuesday at the UC Santa Barbara Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. Wyoming, itself, entered the two-day tournament ranked No. 88 in the country, but the Cowboys weren't able to make a move and finished 18th in the 19-team field with a 54-hole score of 950. Brigham Young, ranked No. 7 in the nation entering the tournament, won the team title with a three-round score of 896. The individual medalist was Patrick Hawkins of the University of San Diego. Hawkins finished with a two-under par total of 214. Wyoming's top finisher was junior David Hearn, who tied for 45th at 234, 18-over par. "We played a golf course this week that we really struggled with," said Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "On a course like this one, and against the strong field we were playing, I think we pressed a little bit at times. But to the guys credit, they kept battling to the last hole. "We just have to work hard this week in practice before our next tournament in Oregon on the 20th and 21st of March." Other ranked teams in the field included No. 34 San Diego State, No. 39 California, No. 41 North Texas, No. 58 UC Santa Barbara, No. 60 Pepperdine, No. 67 Long Beach State, No. 74 Pacific, No. 79 UC Irvine and No. 82 Nevada. Hearn shot rounds of 80, 80 and 74 for his 234 total. Only two Cowboys were able to shoot two out of their three rounds in the 70s -- those two were sophomore Mike Urbatchka (76-84-77=237) and junior Kevin Kayden (78-76-85=239). The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate was played at the La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, Calif. The course measured 6,670 yards and played to a par of 72. Below are the final team scores, as well as Wyoming's individual scores. The Cowboys next tournament will also be played on the West Coast when they travel to Eugene, Ore., for the Oregon Duck Invitational on March 20-21.
