UW's David Hearn and Mike Urbatchka finish second and fourth at Idaho State Invite.
April 18, 2000 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys shot a final round 279 to come from four strokes back of host Idaho State and capture the Idaho State Bengal Invitational on Tuesday. Wyoming's 279 was the lowest round of the tournament, and was fueled by rounds of 65 by sophomore Mike Urbatchka and 66 by junior David Hearn. Hearn was UW's top finisher, tying for second place with a 54-hole total of 210, while Urbatchka finished fourth at 211. Wyoming defeated Idaho State by seven strokes in the team competition. ISU entered Tuesday's final round with a four-shot advantage but shot a final round 290 -- eleven strokes worse than UW's 279. The individual champion was Brian Hughes of Portland State. Hughes finished with a three-round score of 207 -- three shots ahead of Hearn. The team victory was Wyoming's third tournament championship of the season. Wyoming began the 1999-2000 season winning its own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate in September. The Pokes also captured the St. John's University Red Storm Intercollegiate in October. The third Cowboy to finish in the Top 10 at the Idaho State Invitational was senior Reid Lende, who fired a final round 71 on Tuesday to tie for ninth place. "I don't know if a Wyoming golf team has ever won three tournaments in a single season," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "Our experience played a big part in this win. We knew we needed at least one individual to step up today with a really low score, and we ended up getting two rounds in the 60s from Mike (Urbatchka) and David (Hearn). Reid's (Lende) one-under par score of 71 was a great score, as well. Mike didn't have a single bogey in the final round, and David only had one. "It's difficult to beat anyone on their home course, and Idaho State played a fine tournament. This was a good tournament for our confidence as we prepare for the biggest weekend of our season later this week at BYU. We'll be facing a number of teams in our district that we're battling with for a spot in the NCAAs, so this weekend is an important one for us." The Idaho State Bengal Invitational was played on the Blackfoot Golf Course in Blackfoot, Idaho. The course measured 6,722 yards and played to a par of 72. Below are the final team scores, as well as Wyoming's individual scores. Wyoming will travel to Provo, Utah, for the Brigham Young Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22.
