Sept. 22, 2002

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

On the third and final day of the Air Force Falcon Invitational, University of Wyoming's Kurt Kowaluk fired a three-over par total of 75 to place him fifth out of 124 golfers, and give him his third Top 10 finish in the past two weeks.

Kowaluk shot a 54-hole total of 218, two-over par for the tournament, to finish eight strokes back of individual medalist Dan Swanson of UTEP, who won the tournament with a six-under par total of 210. Kowaluk tied for fifth with Mark Weghorst of Miami of Ohio.

In the team competition, UTEP was led by Swanson to the team title. The Miners dominated the field posting an even par total of 864 for the three-day event. The University of Denver placed second at 17-over par 881. The Wyoming Cowboys placed 17th in the field of 24 teams, with a three-round total of 916, 52-over par.

"Kurt (Kowaluk) is playing the best golf of his college career," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "He really is playing consistent golf. All nine of his rounds this season have been between 70 and 75. Kurt is playing with a lot of confidence and composure. It has been fun watching him compete with some of the top collegiate golfers in the country.

"The younger guys had their moments this week. Matthew (Brunk) and Jason (Aichele) both finished up with nice rounds on Sunday of four-over par 76. It is just going to take a little time for our young players to develop and make the adjustment to playing against this level of competition."

Kowaluk began the Falcon Invitational on Friday with an opening round two-under par 70. That put him in a tie for sixth after the first of the three days of the tournament. He followed that with a second round 73 on Saturday and concluded with a 75 that tied him for fifth place.

The other two tournaments that Kowaluk placed in the Top 10 were the Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational on Sept. 10 and the New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Sept. 14. Kowaluk tied for fifth at Nebraska and tied for ninth at New Mexico.

The next tournament for the Cowboy golf team will be the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Brighton, Colo. The tournament will be hosted by the University of Denver.
