Cowboy Golf Holds Lead Entering Final Round Of St. John's Red Storm Intercollegiate
Oct. 1, 1999 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys hold a two-stroke lead over North Carolina-Greensboro heading into Saturday's final round of the St. John's University Red Storm Intercollegiate being played in Farmingdale, N.Y. Wyoming junior Jake Hunter is leading the way for the Cowboys. Hunter is four-under par through 36 holes and holds a one stroke lead over Andrew Svoboda of the host St. John's Red Storm. "The guys all did a fantastic job today," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "We're leading the tournament by two strokes, and the guys played just the way we've been talking about as a team -- go out relaxed, focus on hitting a lot of greens and then try to be consistent in our putting game. "Jake (Hunter) played two outstanding rounds. He started out with a 67 and came back with a 69 in the second round. It seems like we've had a different guy step up in each of our fall tournaments. It's real exciting to see him have this kind of tournament. "It should be fun tomorrow. The guys seem real focused, but relaxed, and I think they're excited to see if we can win a tournament on the road." Not far behind Hunter's four-under par score of 136 is UW sophomore Mike Urbatchka with a one-under total of 139. Junior David Hearn is at plus five 145. Fellow junior Kevin Kayden is nine over, 149, and senior Reid Lende is one stroke back of Kayden at +10, 150. The Cowboys have had an outstanding fall season thus far, winning their own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate on Sept. 7 and finishing second at the Air Force Falcon Invitational on Sept. 19. The St. John's Red Storm Intercollegiate is being played at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The course measures 6,756 yards and plays to a par of 70.
