Cowboy Golf Captures St. John's Red Storm Intercollegiate
Oct. 4, 1999 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys captured their second tournament victory of the 1999 fall season at the St. John's University Red Storm Intercollegiate. Wyoming shot a three-round total of 845 to win by 12 strokes over North Carolina-Greensboro at 857. Wyoming junior Jake Hunter and sophomore Mike Urbatchka both finished with 54-hole totals of 207 to tie for the individual title. They outdistanced Andrew Svoboda of St. John's by one stroke. "It was nice to see Jake (Hunter) and Mike (Urbatchka) play so well," said UW men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "David (Hearn) also played well, and Kevin (Kayden) and Reid (Lende) contributed one round of 71 each which was crucial for us to win the team title. ."Our experience showed this week. We made a lot of birdies and a lot of crucial pars in the final round. I wasn't only pleased with the win, but I'm very happy with the scores our guys shot throughout the tournament. It was fun to watch us win one on the road. Now we have to turn our attention to preparing for the Fresno State tournament later this month." Not far behind Hunter and Urbatchka' three-under total of 207 was UW junior David Hearn at five-over 215. Hearn placed 10th. Fellow junior Kevin Kayden finished in 29th at 10-over par 220, and senior Reid Lende placed 40th at 224, 14-over par. Wyoming's win at St. John's was their first road win this season. The Cowboys have had an outstanding fall season thus far, winning their own Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate on Sept. 7 and finishing second at the Air Force Falcon Invitational on Sept. 19. The St. John's Red Storm Intercollegiate was played at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The course measured 6,756 yards and played to a par of 70. Next up for the Cowboys will be the Fresno State Classic on Oct. 15-16 in Fresno, Calif. Here are the final scores from the St. John's Red Storm Intercollegiate.
