Cowboy Golf Moves Up One Place In Final Round At The Nelson Golf Tournament
Oct. 31, 1999 LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Wyoming Cowboys shot a final round of 294 on Sunday, and moved up one place to finish 15th out of 20 teams at The Nelson hosted by Stanford University. The Cowboys entered the final round in 16th place. UW junior David Hearn finished in a tie for 30th in the field of 104 of the nation's top golfers. Hearn, from Brantford, Ontario, closed out the 54-hole event with a round of 74 and a total of 217, four-over par. UW sophomore Mike Urbatchka, of Sheridan, Wyo., enjoyed the best round of the day for the Cowboys on Sunday. Urbatchka shot a 71. Host Stanford won the team title, coming from three strokes back entering Sunday's final 18-hole round to pass second round leader Fresno State. Stanford finished with a three-round total of 847, one stroke ahead of Fresno State at 848. Wyoming's 54-hole total was 878. The individual champion was Marin Maritz of Tulsa at 203, 10-under par. "The guys did a nice job of rebounding from a poor first round," said University of Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "I know the kids are disappointed by starting out slowly on Friday. But with the two rounds we put together on Saturday and Sunday, we now know that we can compete with some of the top teams in the country. We need to come back in the spring with more consistency. "This ends our fall season. Everyone now has time to focus on their academics and start preparing for a spring season that I know we're all looking forward to." Wyoming's second round score of 278 on Saturday tied for the second best round of the week. Only Fresno State's 274 on Saturday was better. The Nelson was played at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The course measured 6,756 yards and played to a par of 71. The Cowboy golf team will next tee off on Feb. 24-25, 2000, at The 49er Collegiate Classic hosted by Long Beach State University.
