2000-2001 Cowboy Golf Informational Press Release
March 14, 2001 LARAMIE, Wyo. - Jake Hunter Finishes Strong at the University of Hawaii John Burns Intercollegiate: Wyoming senior Jake Hunter fired a three-under par round of 69 on Friday, Feb. 23 to vault into a tie for 30th place out of 100 golfers at the University of Hawaii John Burns Intercollegiate. Hunter also posted a one-under par round of 71 on Thursday as he played the final 36 holes four-under par. Hunter's 54-hole total for the tournament was an even-par 216. The Wyoming Cowboys placed 16th as a team in the field of 19 of the nation's top collegiate golf teams. UW's final team score of 880 placed it ahead of the University of Utah, Nagoya University and Hawaii-Hilo for the 16th spot. New Mexico won the team competition at 832. Michael Letzig of New Mexico captured the individual title with a three-round total of 17-under par 199.. UW played without its No. 1 player, senior David Hearn, who did not compete due to an injured wrist. "Jake (Hunter) really put together two outstanding rounds," said Wyoming men's golf coach Roger Prenzlow. "This tournament featured a number of the top teams in the country. We shot an even-par round as a team in the final round and didn't make a move up or down -- so it is evident how competitive the field was. "I felt like the guys really got their games going on Friday. We haven't had any opportunity to practice outside this spring, and it has showed in our first two tournaments. But it was encouraging to see us improve by six strokes from the first to the second round, and improve by another five shots from the second to third rounds. "We don't like finishing 16th, but playing against a field like this without our number one player (David Hearn), I thought the guys really competed. That final round should give us some confidence heading into the remainder of the spring schedule."
